Indian Legal Glossary

Understanding court jargon is the first step to legal clarity. Below are translations of standard legal terms in India:

A Vakalatnama is a written document by which a client authorizes an advocate to represent them before a court of law, file pleadings, and make statements. It serves as a power of attorney for litigation and must be signed by the client and accepted by the advocate.

A serious crime (such as theft, housebreak, or serious physical offenses) where a police officer, under the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), has the authority to arrest the accused individual immediately without a physical warrant issued by a magistrate, and start investigations without initial court permission.

A precautionary request filed under Section 148A of the Civil Procedure Code (CPC). It alerts the court that an opposite party may file a lawsuit against you. It legally binds the court to notify you and hear your arguments before granting any ex-parte temporary injunctions or stay orders against you.

A judicial order that restrains a party from doing a specific act (restrictive injunction) or compels them to carry out a specific act (mandatory injunction). In civil disputes, temporary injunctions are often sought at the start to preserve property status while the main lawsuit is decided.

A formal, legally binding document issued by a court directing an individual to appear before a judge on a specified date and time to answer charges, provide statements, or produce material documents. Ignoring a summons can lead to non-bailable arrest warrants or ex-parte decrees.
